Default RSP Racing #721 Race Report - Rd 5 2018

tl;dr: Full send and a new PB! This is gonna be a long one!

Friday

Left early again. It's nice to arrive in the morning and have all day to relax. Got settled in and ready for Saturday. Friday night had crazy thunderstorms with flooding and super close lightning. We also played That's What She Said, a card game similar to Cards Against Humanity. So hilarious!

Saturday

It continued to rain on and off so I ended up skipping practice.

Race 2 - AM GTL

Gridded 9A (2nd Wave - 3rd Row). I got a crap start. But got to hang with the lead pack for a few laps. I had lost my left knee puck at Thompson a few weeks before and I ordered a new pair from Woodcraft (those guys rock!) but I had forgot to put them on, so after noticing that I was exhausting myself trying to lean but keep my knee off the ground. About halfway through the race I noticed 4-5 people in front of me put their hands up to go in so I assumed I missed a flag and followed them in. As I was pitting in I noticed the board was still counting down so I got back out there, pissed at my mistake. Unfortunately the quick stop I made in the pits was enough to get my engine to overheat (something I need to look into), so I went back to the pits on the next lap. Was happy to find out I was doing consistent 26s though!

10th of 13 / DNF
Outlap: 01:31.406
Best lap: 01:26.089

Race 10 - AM ULSB

Gridded 7D (2nd Wave - 2nd Row). Much better start this time, 4th or 5th going into T1, but #726 Josh Cuppek came right around me from the outside at the apex. Nicely done! I chased them for a bit and started to lose sight. About halfway through the race I was headed into T3 when I started having some squirrellyness while braking, but I was able to contain it and make the turn. I noticed #343 Rob Pease tried to get me on the brakes in T3 but backed off when I started having trouble. He ended up getting me going up the hill in T4 and we had a nice drag race to T6 where I showed him a wheel, but he closed the door I chased him and a motard that passed me for the rest of the race. It was a fun and tiring race and I got a new lap record as well!

9th of 12

Best lap: 01:25.215

After my race I went up to the turn 6 bleachers to watch The Dash for Cash. That was an exciting race! Congrats to fast guy Paul Duval for getting a payout spot! Did the usual afterwards, watch the awards ceremony, get some dinner, and hang out. We also honored Reed's memory for his birthday last Thursday with some Soco and lime. I tucked in early to get ready for Sunday.

Sunday

I ended up getting a 1:24.9 in practice! One of my goals this year was to get a PB faster than the 1:24.351 on my CBR. Let's repeat that in a race! Unfortunately race 1 caused a pretty long delay due to some oil spillage.

Race 3 - AM LWSB


Gridded 2C. (1st Wave - 2nd Row). Got another good start and slotted into 5th place for T1. Held onto the front 4 riders for about two laps, and the entire rest of the grid behind me, but unbeknownst to me ��. On lap 3 in the T3 chute the same issue from Saturday happened. The entire bike became unpredictable under heavy braking. The rear end came up (as it should) but the front end was wobbly, so I eased up on the brakes. I did this 3 times and on the 3rd time the front end gave out on me and the bike pitched me off. I'm guessing I was giving far too much bar input than the bike would allow. I landed on my left arm and the bike and I came to a rest at the air fence. The first thing I did was try to sit up, but nothing was happening. I was laying on my left side but my left arm wasn't moving when I was trying to move it. I feared the worst right then, that I might have hit my back and spine or something. The corner marshalls were on top of me within seconds getting me out from under the air fence. After a few seconds I was able to stand up with the help of an EMT (who I think was Chris, it's always good to see the crew but not it on the track ��), and while I was not able to move my left arm I could move my fingers so that was a good sign. I was put on a stretcher and took the bus back to the med center so the EMTs could take a look.

Here's the part where you stop reading if you're squeamish.

One in the med center, we attempted to take my suit off and luckily we were able to save it. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug, and I wasn't in a ton of pain so I was able to shimmy out of my suit enough so they didn't have to cut it. Now that they got to take a look at my arm they noticed a ton of blood, but the suit didn't have any holes. That could only mean the bone went through the skin, but went back inside. So that's fun times! I also remember looking to my left and seeing that my shoulder was deformed. So add a broken collarbone to the list. The Speedway Services staff put me in a splint and we were off to the hospital. Josh was kind enough to grab my cellphone for me before we left the speedway, so I could call my wife (who was not happy with me ��). I also got a chance to look at race monitor and found out I had gotten a 1:24.355 laptime the lap before the crash. A new PB and 4 thousandths of my all-time fastest at Loudon (on my CBR 2 years ago).

15th of 15 DNF
Outlap: 01:28.415
Best lap: 01:24.355

At the ER they confirmed that it was a compound fracture of my humerus, and a broken collarbone. My sister in law Melinda happened to be riding home from Maine at the time so she was able to divert and come stay with me until Missy arrived. Can't thank you enough for that! I went for xrays where they also found what looked like a crack in my elbow as well, so I works definitely need surgery. I got to meet my surgeon Dr Duffy and he explained that because the bone went through the skin they would want to start me on antibiotics and send me to surgery to clean out the break so I don't get an infection. They we're able to get me into an OR within a few hours. Luckily Missy was able to get there before they sent me in. This was my first time having any kind of surgery where they knock you out. It was pretty wild. You just peacefully fall asleep and after what feels like seconds you slowly wake up somewhere else. They got me a proper room after recovery and I needed to stay the night so I could take a full round of antibiotics. The next morning they wanted more xrays to make sure I didn't get a collapsed lung. They did find a minor pneumothorax, but it would dissipate on it's own. They also found that I had cracked a rib. ��

I was eventually discharged around 4PM after my last round of antibiotics. Missy and I went to Melinda's apartment in Boston to pick up Jamie and eat dinner (which was amazingly delicious!) and then we made it home around 9.

We called around to CT hospitals and it seemed like no one could even take a consult until the end of the week. Concord was ready to operate Wednesday, so we decided to go with them and will drive back up tonight and the surgery to set the arm and the collarbone will be tomorrow morning.

While it sucks to end a season early, I am glad that I reached my goal for the weekend (24s) and almost reached my goal for the year (faster than 1:24.351. let's be honest 4 thousandths is close enough ��). All I gotta do now is heal up and come back next year! In the meantime I'm sure I'll see you at a race weekend soon!

I hope all the other riders who got hurt this weekend heal up fast as well!

There are so many thanks to be had for this weekend. The LRRS family is like no other! I've had so many people offer help and reach out to see how I'm doing. First and foremost, the NHMS corner marshalls and Speedway Services EMTs. These guys and gals do their jobs amazingly. The corner marshalls got my bike and the air fence off of me until the EMTs were able to pick me up. They also picked up all the parts that went flying and made sure they went back with my bike. The EMTs saved my suit and patched me up proper for the ride to the hospital. Can't thank you guys enough.

My teammates RSP Racing for packing up my things and visiting me in the hospital. My sister in law Mėlīd for riding out of her way to make sure I was ok! And with Mike's help (and Mike's parents) taking care of Jamie so Missy could come up to the hospital for the night. Josh and Cassie Cuppek for driving my truck and trailer home. Holy crap that was awesome of you guys. I seriously owe you for that!

The staff, nurses, and doctors at Concord Hospital. Unbelievably friendly and helpful! We felt so welcome there, which was part of the reason we decided to go back for the second surgery.

Last but always never least, my wife Missy. She has been a trooper through this and I know it's not easy having to take care of me and see me all broken like this. I love you!

DUDE! Glad you're okay. You know I'm pretty close by, let me know if you need help with anything bike related or not, just shoot me a text or give me call.

As for the PB's, that's freaking awesome dude! Heal up and take your time getting back out there. I live vicariously through your racing career now so hopefully it'll continue!

Awesome job this weekend Brendan! I said it before, you were tough to get around and I knew you found some speed. I also knew that PB from your CBR was going to be broken this year. I would call 4/1000 of a second pretty damn close. it was fun to be able to race with you this year, hope to be able to do it again next year!

Thanks man it first thing I did while in the ambulance after Josh dropped my phone off was call my wife, the second was check race monitor. I was pleasantly surprised too see the PB.

Its been a ton of fun racing with you as well. We'll have to wait until next year, so don't get to fast on me!
