Q: Why does an Arai helmet fit so perfectly?
A: Arai uses 5 different shell sizes, this gives the right size helmet for the costomers head. The smallest shell is XXS, size 51-52. For every two sizes, there is one specific shell size starting with XS (53-54) up to XXL (63-64). For really large heads, we manufacture the XXXL shell, which covers size 65-66. The inner shell is shaped to the average size of the human head, but there are different inner shells for Europe, the USA and Asia. Furthermore Arai have developed two main shapes for the full-face helmets: the L-type shell and the G-type shell is rounder and may give more space around the face.

Don't know if that helps clarify the chart just posted but if he's correct this is an easy fix

So XXS is one shell
XS-S is shell 2
M-L is shell 3
XL-XXL is shell 4
XXXL is shell 5

So there is zero issue in replacing the interior of the helmet to resize it. Thanks for coming up with the chart Sean.

That's certainly how the shell sizes worked in 2006. That's where my expertise ends.

My last Arai I bought from Seacoast Cycle and the color I wanted, they only had a medium in stock. Patricia (the gear sales lady) swapped out the pads from a large, and it was a perfect fit. She of course, did this at no charge.

You can also be between sizes and still adjust even further. She showed me that you remove the padding covering on the cheek pads and there's a thin layer of peal away foam that's there just for that reason.
