Reading this story made me think of this thread:

https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-justice...210038283.html

Quote:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Supreme Court justices on Tuesday wrestled with the scope of police authority to search vehicles without warrants, with Chief Justice John Roberts referencing the shiny red convertible taken for a joyride in the 1986 comedy film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" to make a serious legal point.

The justices heard arguments in two cases in which convicted defendants are seeking to have key evidence against them thrown out because it was obtained by police officers through vehicle searches conducted without a court-issued warrant.

One case involved a stolen motorcycle that was covered by a tarpaulin and parked on private property next to a house in Charlottesville, Virginia. The other involved a rental car stopped by police in Pennsylvania - driven by a man who was not named on the agreement with the rental agency - in which heroin was found.

At issue is whether police in the two cases violated the U.S. Constitution's Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable searches and seizures.

In the motorcycle case, Roberts and other justices seemed concerned about issuing a broad ruling in favor of law enforcement that would let police officers not just inspect the immediate area outside a property without a warrant but also potentially inside a house if a vehicle is located there. Under the Fourth Amendment, police need a warrant to search a house unless there is an emergency situation.

As someone who's also had a bike stolen, I don't know what you expected him to do. No amount of bugging police is going to make them do anything they aren't already doing. He brought the facebook pictures into the police and they told him they couldn't get a warrant from just facebook pictures. Was he supposed to cancel his vacation over a stolen bike when you can't really do anything about it? Vigilante justice? Screw getting shot over a bike.

He reported it stolen to the police within hours of it being stolen the same night, I believe patrol cops started looking for it that same night. They told him to come in the next morning when a detective would be on duty. I don't know where you're getting your info.

I don't know wth your talking about. I texted with him, and helped best I could, as did Jeff... Ultimately it was his property and he needed to be in touch with the PD, not some random person who, btw, reported it stolen BEFORE he did. It seemed quite apparent to me that he did not keep in good contact with the PD nor pressed them to do their job, all of which could have been done by making some phone calls.

The FB pictures were eventually good enough to get the warrant, especially given the eye witness accounts of the bike being on the property... A warrant was finally served, but it was too late and the bike was gone.

I never suggested he should cancel his vacation or go on the dudes property with a gun to get in a shootout... Personally, I'd be pissed off as hell about my bike being stolen but gladly take the insurance check and go buy another bike...

That's not true. Jay reported the bike stolen to Waterbury PD the same night it was stolen. He also went to the PD with the facebook pictures the morning after he found out about them. How is this not keeping good contact with the PD?

Just confirmed with Jay. He called his cousin who is a Waterbury cop right after noticing the bike was gone (approx 12am Tues 10/03/2017). His cousin sent a Waterbury cop to his house to take the stolen report within minutes of his call.

why is this even a fucking argument?

Someone who went to the PD to report it, was told no report was made yet by the owner... Just going by what he said. But at this point who the fuck cares...

Yep, this thread is still depressing.

I wish our own members didn't have as much skin in the game so the guy could at least be publicly ridiculed. I've seen him post/sell in the redneck group on FB and grind my teeth every time lol.

Probably in cahoots with the dirtbags that live down the street from me. I've seen the inside of their garage and its all honda civic parts. And their front and back yard is just littered with busted ass hondas. Chop shop much?
