the correct side...



Look at it from the side, it's conical shaped. The "pointy" end of the cone goes towards the block. And while many people reuse them, they're meant to be single use. I assume you change the oil filter with each oil change (I do on the street bike, every other on the race bike, since it gets such frequent oil changes). When you buy oil filters, buy crush washers for each oil filter. Be super slick and ask the dealership parts guy Scotch tape a crush washer to the top of each oil filter box.

Believe it or not, yeah... at least part of the time. Not always; depends on what tools are closest. That overtorqued bolt life lesson (and also a couple of broken fairing tabs) left an impression.

A big factor is that it's a no-brainer thanks to a nifty gadget I have in my toolbox. I was given this really trick T-handle as a gift. It has a deflection-type torque gauge built into it.

Works exactly like a standard T-handle, but when whatever fastener gets snug, you just keep twisting until an arrow on the shaft lines up with your desired torque setting.

When it comes time to put things back together, I just grab it and my rack of bits and sockets instead of a plain T-handle. Easy peasy, no reason not to. I'd be using the exact same tool (minus the torque feature) anyway.

Those things actually look pretty cool. I'll never use them on the bike but i might look into them as I continue down the road of air-cooled 911 engine rebuilding...

^^ Good lord. I thought that price was for the set of 5.

While I've never used a torque wrench on an oil filter, I have made myself paranoid enough to use one on most other bolts. Cracking a transmission case by tightening a drain plug can have that effect on someone.
