Default Winch/battery/load question

Not bike related but thinking about building this in my garage:

I want to mount a winch (@12k load rating) to a hand truck with batteries underneath. The winch will be mounted to a section of rectangular tube welded on the upper portion of the hand truck with the batteries on the tongue of said hand truck. A heavy duty ratchet strap will pass through the tube allowing the top of hand truck to be strapped to a tree. This will be used for pulling trees from the woods rather than logging them in the woods and hauling them out.

No I donít want an ATV/UTV/Gator.

My question is: will one or two batteries wired in parallel run the winch without an engine/alternator charging it as itís used? Or is the thing just gonna die with the first pull? Obviously the thing would have to live on a battery charger later. My other idea is to put my little Yamaha generator on there which has this weird 12v outlet that Iím not sure what the purpose is.....and use that to charge a single battery as itís being used......

Whereís the 12v electrical geniuses?

Would have to know the draw / specs of the winch first I’d presume

Well the one winch I was looking at was a maximum of 359a 12v 6HP spec motor (max based on 12k lb load, at 0lbs it draws 101a) I think it said 650cca min for battery requirements. Itís got a 15 min duty cycle at 12k lbs load. So basically you can run it 15min non stop hauling 12k lbs.

You will kill it quick on battery. Build yourself a 100’ run cord and hook it up to the 208 in your garage.

We use golo brand winches every day for hours on end.

I may be mistaken, but I think you got your math screwy
CCA is important for max flow, but Ah is your reserve capacity.
just for reference i looked up a 650CCA battery which ends up having 75Ah in that particular group..
so 75Ah / 359A is about .21 hour or 12 minutes.

admittedly, very small difference between 12 minutes and 15 minutes..

so 2 75Ah batteries in parallel could theoretically give you 24 minute BUT if you include losses you'll probably be more around 20min of continuous use. Keep in mind battery voltage and current sourcing capability drops considerably as charge is depleted so you maybe only get a fraction of that 20min at pull power (aka the full 6hp).

If I were you I'd get one of those HF inverter/generators that Kurtz picked up. It has a 12 DC outlet and with 2 batteries in parallel you should get all the pulling time you need if you keep the duty cycle low (aka not going balls to the wall with it continuously for 20 min)

Quad will take up room I donít have, quad will need maintenance (more so if itís crappy). Thisíll be something that will have occasional use and make getting trees that are deeper into the woods out easier. I have a 1000w gen thatís a little larger than a car battery, itís quiet and has (2) 110v outlets and one of those funky 12v outlets. Iím confident I could rig up that to maintain the battery(s) during use the same way a quad would with the engine running.

I RARELY use that gen anyway. Itís a Yamaha and I got it for $20 because it had an oil leak that I fixed no problem......so it was a steal.
