Default Wwyu?

What type of round would YOU use in a .380 auto for home/personal defense, & what's your reasoning?

1.Full metal jacket
2.hollow point
3.other

Just curious, as I get a lot of different responses on the subject.

Personally, I'd use a jacketed hollow point, but only because people I consider knowledgeable have told me to, not due to any independent research.

Winter time use of a.380, you could make an argument for a fmj vs jhp because of the extra bulkier clothing people are wearing and you may desire the extra penetration. For home defense and the other three seasons, what Mike said.

I use a 90 grain JHP Hydra Shok by Fedrel in my Sig .380

For defense HP all day.

Read up on FMJ Here and HP Here.

But it completely depends on the actual round used, down to the manufacturer.

The idea is for the bullet to discharge all of its energy into the "subject". FMJ rounds tend to punch right through. This means that they only discharge a portion of their energy into the target. The rest of that energy is used to go through and continue to travel on after punching a small hole through the target. A JHP is intended to "mushroom"m thus creating a larger surface area, which helps dissipate energy and slow the bullet in the intended target. This means that all of the bullet's energy has been discharged into the victim and caused much more damage than if the round traveled through.

Make sense?

If your bullet doesn't discharge all of its energy into the target, you'll need a much larger round to cause the same amount if damage and stopping power. It's easy physics. JHP for stopping people.

personal preference, but i used to carry Hornady FTX.

http://www.hornady.com/store/LEVERevolution-FTX-c-416

i wouldn't carry a .380 for home defense because:

- it's a sub-sub compact, and at home, that doesn't matter
- its small size limits its capacity
- being in a structure means the potential for very close combat exists
- a lot of damage can be done by somebody who doesn't know that they're dead yet, therefore, it's good to let them know sooner rather than later - therefore, shoot them more, or shoot them WITH more

volumes can be written upon this subject, but i'll leave it here:

the best gun for home defense is...
1 - a dog
2 - a pump shotgun
3 - everything else

I only mildly disagree.

Fuck pump shotguns. 95% (made up fact...) of the people that own them would be killed by the bad guy while trying to figure out how to make it make that sound that EVERYONE says makes bad guys instantly run away terrified.

Fuck any gun that requires two hands to operate.

Fuck any gun that requires manual input other than pulling the trigger to make it go bang repeatedly.
