View Full Version : How To: Install Cox Radiator Gaurd

This installation is the Cox Radiator Guard on a 2006 Yamaha R6. Other installs of this product will be similar.
Difficulty - Beginner
Time - 15-20 mins
Tools - 10mm socket, 5mm allen, and dikes.

1. I started off by removing the front fairing to gain easy access to the radiator.

2. Then I removed the mounting bolt from the bottom of the radiator. This is necessary because the radiator guard has a mount that goes between the rubber washer assembly and the bracket of the existing mount.

3. Now attach the sticky foam pieces to the radiator guard. You want to put these adheisive side on the guard that is going to touch the radiator. It is easier to remove the backing from the sticky foam thingies by squeezing the foam and mushing it around between your fingers until the backing starts to peel up like so.

Put 6 on the top part of the frame and 6 on the bottom part of the frame like so...

4. Now thread the zip ties through the holes on the top of the guard. Insert the zip tie from the side that will be touching the radiator so it will be easier to secure the tie around the radiator mounts. When both are done it should look something like this.

5. Next put the guard in place in front of the radiator and secure the zip ties loosely around the radiator mount brackets like so. Do not tighten them yet!

6. Put the bottom radiator guard mount between the rubber washer and the radiator mount and secure with the bolt that we took out in the 2nd step. Tighten the bolt.

7. Now tighten the zip ties on the upper mounts and cut the ends of the zip ties off once tight. They should look like this on both sides.

Nice, but I'm surprised you didn't use safety wire or something. The metal bracket to which it's attached looks like it may have sharp edges which would cut the ziptie at some point. Maybe not, but thought I'd mention it anyway

It could be a possibility, but the edges aren't really sharp and most of the pressure of the zip tie is on the flat surface of the middle metal piece. I think a zip tie actually holds it sturdier as well.

Nice job.

I heard someone who took rad fans out, changed to samco hoses, water wetter and a graves works radiator cap (it goes from a 1.1 bar to a 1.8) and it dropped his engine temp down a ton.

It took much much longer to come to temp of 212 where the fans come on and averaged about 170 degrees in 90 degree florida heat.
