Just discovered something pertinent to this thread. I haven't done the relay thing on the premise that the draw is so low it's not anything to worry about. It was fine last summer when riding regularly.

I keep my bike on a battery tender over the winter as a rule. This year I was moving it around the shop and unplugged it sometime in January (I think). I figured with such low draw, the USB charger wouldn't be a problem even after several weeks.... well, a few days ago i was going over the bike to make sure all was ready for the first ride, and the battery was way down... not dead but unable to turn the engine over.

I've rethought this. I don't use the charger that much so I just redid the wiring so that I can plug it in to the Battery Tender harness (connectors are in the bike's tail) when needed, but take it completely out of the picture for the other 90 percent of the time.

I think I mentioned that somewhere.
And was the exact reason why I did it that way from the get go.

My USB connector draws about .5 amps per week from the battery, I was monitoring it earlier this year when my battery almost died from it. I unplug it completely when in storage.

I need to wire it into my headlight relays but I've been lazy.

This. I don't use it often enough to bother.

I initially wired mine to the battery to have the option of a second port in the tail... to charge a separate device, for example.
