although mine is nowhere near as epic as yours. I should probably try one of these days, but I'm not sure my sideburn areas will fill in as nicely, hence the short-keeping.

You don't have one pant leg rolled up and travel everywhere on a Schwin with a basket, so I think you're exempt. (Actual hipster sighting by angry old man)

Alright, had time to write down some thoughts:

A lot of what I've learned has been through trial and error, I've only recently started actually reading about this stuff. Some of the best links I've found are shared below.

First things first, it WILL itch when you first start trying to grow it. If you’re someone who is clean shaven all the time, it will itch more than someone who maintains a very short/ stubbly beard. There is no “solution” to this, just push through it, it WILL stop, I promise. With that said there ARE things you can do to help make this itch manageable.

    - Moisturize. Face type lotion, rub it in deep, you need to get to the skin, not just the hair. Do it at night so it sits there overnight unmolested. Also, lotion makes your beard greasy, and you don’t want to be going out like that.

    - SHAMPOO it! In the morning, NOT EVERY DAY. Shampoo generally strips the natural oils out of hair in an effort to clean it. If you do it every day you’ll have a dry scratchy unhealthy beard. I use anti-dandruff shampoo because treats the skin more than the hair

    - CONDITION IT! Definitively condition the day you shampoo, and possibly once between each time you shampoo. Now that I’m thinking about it, I probably shampoo once a week and condition twice.

    - Comb it! I ALWAYS have a little 4 inch black fine tooth comb in my pocket. It helps train the hair to go down instead of out, if its naturally curly, it will help straighten it, and best of all, the bristles rub on your cheek, so it scratches it for you!

Next to all of that stuff, the second most important thing, and the MAIN thing that makes the difference between looking like Tali-Dan and a bearded gentleman, is SHAPE! This article lays it out perfectly.

    http://www.ruggedfellowsguide.com/tr...eard-neckline/

I recommend letting everything just GROW for at least 3 weeks, closer to a month if you can stand it, ONLY trimming the neck line, and only up to where the wrinkle line (when you tilt your head down) is, just about at your adam’s apple. That will help you get a good base, without looking like a drifter. After this, try to find a barber in your area that does bear trims/ shapes, if you can’t find one, make the drive and go to mine. I looked like a different person after he shaped my beard the first time, it was an eye opening difference. after they make the shape, you can maintain it

Once you see where the strong/weak points are you can trim etc where needed. If you’re going for longer overall length like mine, use scissors and a barber comb. If you want a “full” beard, but still semi short, invest in a $30 clipper with attachments from Wal-Mart or something.

If you’re going longer, you’ll have to fade it from the side burns down. So, closer to your cheek bones, it should be trimmed short, farther to your neck, it gets longer. Don’t be afraid to just try stuff, its hair, it grows back.

Lastly is “product.” I use this stuff:

    https://www.etsy.com/listing/7383343...ir-styling-wax

Yes, it’s $20, but it lasts me 6 months to a year depending on the length of my beard, shorter = longer lasting.

you can also get into oils and stuff, which I may be trying soon, since winter beard + slightly longer, and the more dry weather requires more shampooing. the oils will replace the stuff the shampoo strips away.

Both of you guys are exempt from the hipster douchebag community as you pre-dated the phenomenon.

If it's any consolation, you're both still prominent members of the regular douchebag community.

Yep, trimming nose and ears takes way too long.
Thank God it never got to my back, yet.

Yes to everything Kyle said, and I also use Botanical Skin Works Mens Bay Lime Beard Conditioning Oil.

I have had a beard for over 4 years, and I am not trending it. I'll still have it long after the trend is gone.

I keep it short, between 3-4 inches.
