MSF course in the winter?

Who're the MSF instructors on here? Apparently the new rules are that you get your learners permit, then you have to take an approved MSF course before applying for your license and taking the DMV (written/road) tests?

I need to get jake on track for taking the class I guess.......

Yeah they won't start until April. Sign up now though to make sure he gets a spot in the first class. Classes in early April can be wet and cold.

You don't NEED to get the permit. Some would argue it's better not to get it, as it would give him a chance to pick up bad habits before the course.

You just need to pass a motorcycle knowledge test at the DMV ($40), then pass the MSF course ($?). Those count as both the written and road tests, then to to the DMV to get the M endorsement ($30).

But if Jake walks to ride legally before the course then ala permit.

There are also 2 day courses offered. If a 2 day weekend course is what will work then there's only one school in CT that offers that schedule. Motorcycle safety center of New England in Plainfield.

technically you DO need the permit before you can apply for the license. you do not need it for a predetermined amount of time, but you have to pay the DMV the money and take the test, even if you show up to the DMV with the pass certificate.

You need:
Take DMV Permit (knowledge and vision) test for $40. this gets your permit. you can only renew once per year now.
Take MSF class and pass ($225?) this counts as the license knowledge and skills test.

If you take the MSF first, then go to the DMV you will still have to take the DMV $40 permit test. If this is the route you go, I highly suggest taking your "Pass" certificate to DMV, NOT telling them, getting your forms and shit for a permit test, pass the test, get your permit then get back in line and say "i'd like to get my motorcycle license please."
I say this because if you try to go to the license line first, they'll take your stuff behind the counter. if you are there during a shift change, or someone goes on break, and your stuff gets misplaced, good luck.

I even linked the page where it spells it out. Technically you DONT need to get the permit. But it's only an additional $16 with no extra effort.

Pass the motorcycle knowledge and vision tests at a DMV Hub Office. The 16-question knowledge test is based on information from the Connecticut Motorcycle Manual and the Connecticut Driver's Manual. What it will cost:
$40 testing fee for the motorcycle knowledge and vision tests.
$30 fee to have the "M" endorsement or the "M" endorsement with "3" restriction added to license.
$16 for motorcycle learner's permit (optional).

He already has an *expired permit that he got last summer. I had him out on the road a few times already with it. What's the particulars with the MSF course? Bring his bike? They supply a bike? Is there an informational page?

Bring a helmet, boots, gloves, long pants, long sleeve shirt. They supply bikes.

School has bikes there. Bring a helmet (dirt bike helmets are nice because air flow while sitting), eye protection (face shield would have to be over eyes but doesn't have to be fully closed, eyeglasses, googles, etc.), full fingered gloves, long sleeves, pants with no tears or holes, and over the ankle footwear.
