Question Do you need your AR15?

I've given this some thought over the last few weeks. Prior to Sandy Hook I thought owning an AR15 was fucking stupid and silly. Like WHY? And then CT told me I couldnt own one anymore and I had 2 weeks to get my shit in order to get one before I was fucked for life. I along with many others on this forum ran to get one.

After owning it for a few months and going to the range a total of 3 times its been locked away ever since. Unless the Russians invade or the zombies come I have zero need for this gun. I will never hunt with it nor will anyone else (anyone that says so is a fucking retard and we all know it). I will never defend my home with it (I own a 12 gauge & hang hunts for close quarters).

So after the FL shooting I gave it some thought... do we as civilians really need this type of fire power? And yes I get the entire slippery slope mentality but lets put that aside for now. Should a 19 year old (forget the RED flag issues and the systematic failure) be able to walk in and buy something like an AR15 with a 30 round mag on a whim.

I watched this video and agree: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghom3MiDSd4

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this, where do you stand? Is owning a paper weight that sits in the closet 99.9% of the time worth it? Lets all be honest here.
I don't really ride, but when I do... I'm faster than you!

That guy is a fucking moron. It isn't the gun that takes away the lives. It's the self entitled douchebag who pulls the trigger.

You've been hanging out with too many "pretty people".

Where does he think the gun is going to go when he gives it up? To the scrapyard?

Considering that idiot just made an SBR without a tax stamp I hope he gets arrested. The ar isn't this mystical high powered rifle people make it out to be. The round isn't even big enough to hunt deer with legally. Stop watching CNN and look at what the real issue is. This gun has been around for decades with no issues until recently.....whats changed?!? Not the gun

I don’t think anyone on here could make a firm argument that they need their AR with the exception of someone like Brian or Darren. However there are many of us who want our AR’s as they are fun guns to shoot and mod along with it’s out right to own. I got mine around the same time as you and I’ve shot it a 1/3 of what you have sooooo once lol but I have no desire to give it up and I like having it as a paper weight to look at. You also have to think about isolating just this gun, what about someone with a Glock 19 and a bunch of 33 round mags??? Everyone is so fixated on just the AR, yes I understand the other issue in other areas is the age one could buy an AR but you need to look at the bigger picture and go ahead and tighten up laws on age restrictions. . If it’s not an AR they will use a shotgun or as mentioned a pistol wth high capacity.

If your AR us a credible tool as a rifle, why should how it looks matter?

Mental health should be the focus here. Not the gun, alcohol, or drugs.

To answer the original question. No. Not by a long shot. Why do I. It was a relatively cheap rifle that I could build my way. And if the AR was not around then the common people would then find the next cool gun to build the way they want. Take that away people will go to the next one.

Over and over again it’s not the gun. This latest tragedy just IMO proves it again. The system is wrong.

But I will say this. Something has to change. Something has to be tried.

Put our military to work. Put armed military at schools. The argument is we don’t want our kids going to school with armed guards. But I ask this. Would you rather have that armed guard or than that armed kid.

We already tried something, it was the ban. Things weren’t as bad then, partly due to the ban and partly not (most likely). It’s basic stats, if there are less of a certain type/class of gun then there are less crimes committed with that type/class of gun.

We probably won’t get another ban as long as the people in Congress think they can get re-elected without one. Once the voters back up their demands with action, our elected officials will fall in line. Fortunately for Congress, the people that actually vote are the only ones that think long term. Who knows, maybe the young ones will bring about a viable third party and really clog up the works with inaction. It almost happened in 92, no reason it can’t again now, neither party has strong long term initiative leadership at the moment...

In other news, threats were made by a student at a CT school and there is now State Police protection at RHAM middle and high schools. Yay.

Its a slight rant and kind of is coherient in my mind so here goes. Try not to bash me

Do we need it? No. Do we want it? Maybe. Should we be told either way? Nope.

I think its important you went out and got the gun when you did. You are keeping its memory and history alive and maintaining a little bit more of your freedom when they banned it for everyone else. I am not a gun nut nor do i own one but i think the best part of having that gun is actually just having it. They have a rich and colorful history and while yours is new you will always remember why you bought it which was to express a freedom that was being taken away from you. I would take it my grave with me if i were you.

I view it as a kin to my sword collection. Do i need a 400 year old katana? No but i think its great that i do. Do i need a templar knight sword? No. I have them because they have history and represent a simpler time and place. I will never ever use them so im slightly jealous you can use your ar even a couple times. View it as a collectable that represents you and your country if nothing else. Any edged weaponed is banned entirely in scotland where i lived for awhile and that only made them more precious to me to draw another similarity.

Ps. Old swords are a bitch to keep up on, especially japanese ones. Its probably 2 hours a month going over them when i havent touched them. If i do touch them with gloves its about 15 minutes immediately after and if i touch them bare handed its 2 hours immediately after to clean and condition them. I can let the medieval and normal older swords go for a day or 2 before needing to clean them after touching but an old folded japanese sword will start rusting from your finger print in a couple hours.
