    Default Weird tire tear

On 4/22 I lowsided at Thompson in Turn 3, left turn. It was my 4th session of the day, lap two of the session. I was beginning to feel like like I was shaking off the rust, little more relaxed but wasn't really pushing it, was definitely still the slowest guy in Yellow. I started to tip in, and the bike just kept tipping in, I was down well before the apex.

Last night I was assessing the damage, and found this tear on the left side of the rear tire. These are Dunlop Q3's with maybe 8 track days on them at a fast Red pace. I was running about 30/30 pressures. Any input? Are these tires donezo?

The internet is overflowing with images of Dunlop tires cracking...but that doesn't look like one. If that is the only example, it almost looks like that is from impact with something, which cut the tire.

I don't know if that cut alone would make me toss the tire, but it's hard to tell in pictures how deep it is. Confidence is key, though, so if you're gonna waste hundreds of dollars in trackdays riding around worried the tire isn't gonna stick...replace it.

    Pirelli dot, end thread

But seriously, Kurtz is right confidence is key. Hence why I will never run certain tires on the track

Any chance you'll have a 120/180 set of those discounted Rosso Corsas for Tues 5/8?

I actually won’t be at the 5/8 Thompson date.

I will be in Hamden on Saturday evening, if you’re still there and have a way to mount them? Or, I live right in Naugatuck and could mount them here this Saturday during the day.

I had some Q3's back in the day that did have the infamous Dunlop Q3 crack. It did not look like that, so Mike might be correct. I thought I had a post on here about it, but could not find it with a quick search. I do remember talking to Mike about it and he gave me the same advice. I ended up using the tire simply because the crack was not any deeper than the tread grooves.

I will say I noticed some fluid spots leading into Turn 3 after your crash. I am not sure if it was there before you went down, or if it was from your crash, but I was tentative going through there after. There were no additional crashes in that turn the rest of the day as far as I know.

Good luck in getting the bike sorted.

Between Rob and Kurtz all things have been said. that looks like debris damage, not a crack. it does not appear to go even remotely as deep as the sipe right next to it. if i was comfortable on the tires, i'd ignore the shit out of it and ride. But if its in the back of your mind, it will affect your day.

If I can see correctly, you have no chicken strips?

So I wonder how much you are leaning the bike? At a red pace or even a intermediate pace, you could use a lot less tire (which is the goal, leaning is not the goal).

Guys at NYST were dragging elbows with Q3's. I used them at the track for a long time the tires are not the issue.

I would encourage you to have a coach ride with you on your next outing to see how your body position, breaking and tip in look. Honestly, the tires are not the issue.

    Good luck

    There's a "fast" Red pace?

Honestly, the track was pretty cold that day and I was giving it two laps on Race DOTs before I picked up the pace. I think one lap on street tires probably wasn't enough to get enough heat in them. For some perspective, I ran street tires (Bridgestone S20's) all of last year in blue group but I gave them a solid 2 laps to warm up AND I ran the pressure way down (28/28).

Just my two cents. If it makes you feel any better there was a crash EVERY session of blue group except for one that day...
