    Luckily for me, i dont have to worry about the timing chain on my 13 outback, because Subaru replaced the whole shortblock two months ago with 100k on it, for free due to excessive oil consumption.

    I'm going to try to get the covers off tonight and inspect for oil leaks as much as possible. the kit i'm eyeing comes with the seals, so they'll be there just in case.

    I'm not concerned with the removal of the pulley, but more the removal of the bolt that holds it on. it's basically just a metal ring with 4 studs coming out of it, attached to a breaker bar. studs go in the holes on the pulley so you can hold the pulley while breaking loose the bolt.i can probably weld some 1/2 inch bolts to a piece of flat steal that fits in the holes and do it myself.

    Do the water pump while you're in there

    i can't imagine it'd be too much for you to handle. You could probably spend some time reading or watching YouTube DIYs and know exactly what you'd be getting into.

    May want to consider replacing whatever radiator and water hoses are accessible while you're in there. Then again they're only 6 years old, so maybe not. My Frontier was 13 or 14 years old when I did the timing belt on it, so it was definitely due for pretty much everything.

    yes, waterpump is on the list too.

    looks like i can get all the parts and the crank pulley toll for under $300. service at a dealer is looking like 700-1000 depending on location.

    Roger.. if clearance is an issue which I'm guessing it is what I've done in the past is get a shallow/short 1/2 dr impact socket and 24-36" extension. Put the socket on the bolt, have someone bump the engine over you can put the extension on and wedge it against the ground or frame rail then have ur helper bump it over again and that should loosen the bolt.

    Don't remember anything specific about the pulley. Pretty sure I just pulled the bolt and then the pulley. Interwebs says if you can't get the bolt out and have a manual (pretty sure you do), just have someone step on the brake with the car in 5th while you break it loose.

    Alternatively, I might have done what Pero suggested with bumping the starter with a breaker bar wedged on the ground.

    I'll probably be taking a day off and doing this myself, so i'm tentative to do the starter bump technique. I know it's been done successfully for ever, but i've never done it and can't afford to fuck anything up lol.

    Side note, i found a RIDICULOUSLY thorough video on youtube and nothing looks too challenging, so i'll be placing the parts order tonight. it should all be here by next weekend.

    I probably watched the same video before I did mine. Seriously don't stress about it. It's time consuming and there's a lot to do but it really wasn't hard
